🇮🇳 India Playbook

— expert guidance for Indian cardholders
🇮🇳Should I transfer to a hotel or airline program?

Almost always: transfer to airlines, not hotels. Here's why: (1) Hotel programs (Marriott, Hilton, IHG) have devalued aggressively — dynamic pricing means the cost can double overnight. (2) Transfer ratios to hotels are often punishing (Amex→Marriott is only 1:0.75). (3) The one exception is Hyatt — maintains a fixed award chart, and Park Hyatt Maldives at 25K/night is genuinely excellent. If you're considering Marriott for luxury travel: run the math each time (points needed ÷ cash night rate = your effective ₹/point). If it's below ₹0.7/point, book cash.

🇮🇳India → Singapore Business Class
Path:amex-mrkrisflyer

Transfer Amex MR → KrisFlyer (1:1, instant) and book Singapore Airlines Business Class at 35,000 miles one-way from Delhi or Mumbai. No fuel surcharges on SQ metal. Alternatively, HDFC Infinia transfers at 1:1 (3–7 days). Book 330 days in advance for award space — SIN Business sells out fast. This is the single best-value Business Class redemption for Indian cardholders.

🇮🇳India → Japan Business Class
Path:amex-mrana-miles

ANA Mileage Club is the undisputed best program for India–Japan. DEL→TYO Business Class on ANA metal costs just 32,500 miles one-way — better than any other Star Alliance program. Transfer Amex MR 1:1 to ANA (1–3 days). No fuel surcharges. ANA NH820 (Delhi–Narita) is direct; alternatively, connect via Singapore or Bangkok.

🇮🇳Best use of Amex India points

Amex India Membership Rewards is the most versatile Indian card currency. Best transfers: (1) KrisFlyer (1:1, instant) — Singapore Biz at 35K, Japan via SQ. (2) ANA Miles (1:1) — best India→Japan and Star Alliance Europe. (3) Etihad Guest (1:1) — Europe and USA via AUH on partner carriers. (4) Flying Blue (1:1) — Europe promos. (5) Asia Miles (1:1) — low-surcharge Asia Pacific. For hotels: Marriott (1:0.75) is OK for chains, but Hyatt is unavailable from Amex India. Transferring to Hilton (1:2) is poor value due to devaluation.
